Types of Bread

Pumpernickel is a heavy, slightly sweet rye bread, particularly associated with the Westphalia region of north–western Germany (first mentioned in print in 1450).

Taboon is a flatbread, sold as street food throughout the Middle East and often stuffed with hummus, falafel or shaved meat.

Zopf originated in Switzerland, but is also popular in Austria and Germany (particularly in Bavaria). It's baked in the form of a plait, and traditionally eaten on Sunday mornings. The dough is brushed with egg yolk or milk before baking, giving it a golden crust. The German word zopf means a plait or braid; the bread is known in French and Italian by the equivalent words (tresse and treccia, respectively).
